The DPI (dots per inch) information in an image file is stored in the metadata of the file. Here are some details on where to find DPI information for a few common image formats:

  • JPEG - DPI information is stored in the JFIF metadata segment. This includes the X and Y resolution in dots per inch.
  • PNG - DPI information is stored in the pHYs chunk. This contains the pixels per unit X and Y, along with the unit specifier usually set to "meters".
  • TIF - DPI is stored in the ImageResolution tag. This contains both horizontal and vertical resolution values in pixels/inch.
